Milk Frothers: Buying the Best Deal

A milk frother is an appliance that complements a basic coffee maker. With a separate frother machine or device, you do not necessarily need to buy the works of an espresso machine with frother.

Frothing milk aerates it or stirs it to get lots of air into it. The result is a foam with a light texture and more volume. Then, you blend this froth with coffee to make specialty drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes. You end up saving money over buying coffee and milk drinks at coffee bars.

Types of frothers are:

1. Frothers that come on cappuccino makers. These typically produce a stream of steam that froths your milk.

2. The hand pump type of frother has a plunger attached to a fine wire mesh screen usually inside a stainless steel cup. It takes your labor to work the pump to create froth, but the cost is very much in the affordable range.

3. Then, there are motorized whisks which are handheld electric appliances. Better to go electric if you have a larger batch of froth to make.

4. An electric frother machine is more expensive than the alternatives I’ve named, but does the job when you need to make many specialty coffees at once.

Study my reviews below before you buy. Let your coffee desires dictate your purchase.

1. Bonavita BV1800SS 8-Cup Coffee Maker

Bonavita BV1800SS 8-Cup Coffee Maker

Editor Rating:

The Bonavita BV1800 is a drip coffee maker that does not make cappuccinos or lattes. A separate frother is required.

However, this model is noted for its excellent German design. The Bonivita BV1800 makes 8 cups and sells for $112 with free shipping on Amazon.

Works much better than most big retail store brands in that it hits the mark of the optimal temperature range of 200 degrees to 205 degrees. Competing makers often brew coffee at only 180 degrees or just below. Full flavor and good extraction from the grounds results from the right temperature.

Comes without a built-in timer or digital temperature control. Designed, though, to hit a precise temperature range for a bright blend at 200 degrees to a heavy, bolder blend at 205.-Showerhead releases multiple streams of water vs. a single stream to evenly saturate your grounds. Saves on the amount of grounds needed per brew.

Speedy coffee brewing. In only 5-7 minutes, its 1400 watt heater produces 8 cups ready to drink.

Choose this basic model with glass carafe or the 1800TH with a thermal carafe. The glass carafe is equipped with a warming plate. It’s very easy to pour without dripping into the thermal carafe’s top.

Originally the BV1800 did carry the high certification of the SCAA, the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Now the newer model, the BV 1900 does. This coffee maker still rates high on the quality scale. Built to endure of stainless steel with few plastic parts. With 2 year warranty.

Also you can drink a decaf and a half caffeinated - half decaf coffee. The machine reads the barcode on the pods and thus “knows” just how to brew each.

Consider the reports that the Nespresso VertuoLine makes outstanding espresso and merely good coffee. Some ask whether the coffee brews at a hot enough temp. Consider also its price tag for a home machine. Coffee pods run $1.10 each. Espresso pods run $ .85 each.

3. Zojirushi CD-WBC30-TS Micom oz. Mug

Zojirushi CD-WBC30-TS Micom 3-Liter Water Boiler and Warmer, Silver Brown + Knox 16 oz. Mug

Editor Rating:

The Zojirushi CD-WBC30-TS Micom 3-Liter Water Boiler and Warmer is just that—a water boiler and warmer not a tea kettle and not a drip coffee maker.

At the same time, 4 temperature settings of 208 degrees, 195 degrees, 175 degrees, and 140 degrees make the machine perfect for black and herbal teas, oolong tea, green tea, and teas that require less intense brewing or delicate teas, respectively.

Also, it dispenses water in “cafe drip mode” setting at 60 percent less than its regular water force setting. Thus, it can work in brewing drip coffee through carafes with grounds in a filter situated at the top.

The temperature control system involves a micro-computer. In addition to the 4 temperature settings, this Zojirushi will reboil water to 212 degrees F. And it will keep the heated water warm at any of the temperature settings you choose.

In just 10 to 15 minutes you have hot water for soups or noodles or tea. Can carry up to 3 liters of water. And it comes with a timer function for signalling “on” 6 to 10 hours later.

A steam saver function lowers the electrical power just before boiling the water to reduce the amount of steam coming from the vent. A water level indicator reveals exactly when you need to add water.

Only $108 and free shipping right now on Amazon. A not too expensive machine for hot tea anytime. But for milk in coffee or cappuccino or a latte, a frother is necessary.

4. DeLonghi BAR32 Retro 15 BAR Pump Espresso and Cappuccino Maker

DeLonghi BAR32 Retro 15 BAR Pump Espresso and Cappuccino Maker

Editor Rating:

A budget model, semi-automatic pump espresso machine. With the BAR32, it is easy to make lattes and cappuccinos given the built in swivel jet frother. Available on Amazon at $89 with free shipping.

Uses either E.S.E. (Easy Serve Espresso) pods to cut coffee costs or ground espresso.

Ground espresso, though, improves the taste say users. Also comes with a thermostat for water and one for steam for precise coffee making. Froths milk quite well. Makes a very good crema.

It’s a pump system machine that does achieve 15 bars of pressure—the ideal for espresso. Most budget espresso machines utilize steam driven brewing and fail to reach the pressure levels needed for espresso. The DeLonghi BAR32 won’t burn your espresso. Semi-automatic in that you decide when to turn the pump on and off.

An Italian machine. An entry level machine. A machine that is easy to clean as the 35 oz. water tank and drip tray pull out and fit back with ease. A machine that users say gives a lot in terms of function for its low cost.

5. Blumwares Vienne Milk Frother

Milk Frothers: Buying the Best Deal

Editor Rating:

You don’t necessarily need an espresso maker. A milk frother like the Blumwares Vienne Automatic creates the foam needed for cappuccinos and lattes at a much lower price than that of full-fledged espresso machines with frothers.

You can buy this model on Amazon for $42.99 with free shipping. It’s a jug milk style that combines milk heating and frothing. Also, set it to make cold milk froth drinks.

Made from sturdy stainless steel to last. Insulated to keep frothed milk warm for several hours.

A basic, low cost model with a simplified on / off control switch. Easy to use, but without the ability to make a precise choice of temperature for frothing.

Quiet, easy to clean unit. For froth, the capacity equals up to 125 ml. For heated milk, up to 250 ml.

Works with nut milks for vegans or dairy milks.

My Recommendations

I have reviewed an excellent coffee maker, the Bonita BV1800, and a frother of note, the Blumwares Automatic. Both are competitive in terms of price and quality.

Also, I recommend you look at the higher end Nespresso VertuoLine with the automatic Aeroccino frother for a full espresso, coffee, cappuccino and latte maker with extras. Investigate the DeLonghi BAR32 Retro 15BAR Pump machine for an economical answer to home espressos and cappuccinos.

Finally, if tea is your thing, the Zojirushi 3-Liter Water Boiler and Warmer has exact settings for a variety of teas. From this Zojirushi Water Boiler and Warmer you can brew coffee through the type of carafe that holds filter and coffee grounds at its top. Be stimulated by your coffee or tea!
